SLJ Day 5 The Sky's The Limit Week 4

Activity 1 Environment Day - Beat Plastic Pollution
  1. We use material bags instead of plastic
  2. Not buy plastic bottles, use a metal bottle instead
  3. Pick up rubbish outside and put it in a rubbish bin

Activity 2 Adoption Day
I choose the Kangaroos, Quokka and Wombat
Simalarates:
  • They are all native animals to Australia
  • All three of these animals are herbivores
  • Kangaroos, Quokkas and Wombats eat grass

Differences:
  • Wombats are threatened by hunting
  • Kangaroos communicate by making clucking sounds
  • Quokkas and Wombats come out at night to hunt

Activity 3 Concluding The Journey
What is one thing that you learned from participating in the
Summer Learning Journey programme this year?I learnt that
burning fossil fuels is a participant to global warming.

What is one thing that surprised you? One thing that surprised me
was how quick I completed the Summer Learning Journey.

What is one thing that concerned or upset you? Something that
concerned me was how endangered some of the animals in the
world are.

What is one thing that you (or your family) can do, moving
forward, to help protect our natural environment? Continue to
use material bags and pick up any rubbish that is not in the rubbish
bin.

SLJ Day 4 Making Promises Week 4

Activity 1 Campaigning For Conversation
I choose to do my campaign about the Sea Lions. My slogan is
Sea you later, maybe

Activity 2 The Plastic Pledge
I asked my Mum about Countdown going plastic bag free, this is
what she said, “it is a good idea because plastic bags are doing a
lot to the environment”

Activity 3 Restricted Access
I think that restricting the amount of people that visit Machu Picchu
is a bad idea. I think this because lots of people want to go up to
the mountain, some people might  travelled a long way to see the
mountain and they can’t go and see it. Maybe instead of putting
restrictions on Machu Picchu, the government could put up barriers
so that the environment can grow again, and when it has completely
healed then they can take the barriers off.

SLJ Day 3 Taking Action Week 4

Activity 1 Predator Free 2050 - A Call To The Arms
I liked the first video, the Cacophony Project.
I choose this video because I think that using technology as
part of the traps is a really cool idea. I think that adding technology
to the pest traps will help catch them faster, and that the big project
they are working on will work really well.

Activity 2 Protecting The Most Vulnerable
  1. Māui dolphin males are smaller and lighter than the females
  2. There are 63 individual Māui dolphins left in the world
  3. Female Māui dolphins can weigh up to 50 kg in weight
  4. Māui dolphins have a pointed dorsal fin
  5. Māui dolphins have mixed groups with male and female
  6. Māui dolphins like to swim in water deeper than 20 m

Activity 3
Polar Bear: I would save the polar bear because I don’t think that
it is fair that their population is declining because of global warming.

Panda:  I would save the panda because they are being hunted by
humans and their habitat is being destroyed.

Stinking Corpse Flower: I would choose to save this plant because
it is so unusual.

Bengal Tiger: Bengal  tigers are really endangered and I would save
these because like I said with the polar bear I don’t think that it is fair
the they die out because humans are destroying their habitats

Sumatran Rhino: I think I would save this animal because there
only around 80 left in the world

Eastern Gorilla: I would save the Eastern Gorilla because they are
cool animal and they should not go extinct because of humans.

Kakapo: I would choose to save this bird because it is native to
NZ and we need to keep it alive.

Kea: I think that the Kea needs saving, it is also another native
animal to NZ, and it can only be found in the South Island so I
think that we need to save it, because it is so rare.

Blue Throated Macaw: I think we should save this bird because
we need to stop poaching and this bird is being hunted by poachers.

Vaquita: This porpoise needs saving because they are so close
to extinction and they are so rare, did you know there is about 30
of these animals left in the world.

SLJ Day 2 Protecting Our Own Week 4

Activity 1 A Flying Fox
I want to try the zip lining in Rotorua, because being able to go on
long zip line sounds fun plus look down at all the plants and nature.
It would be fun to have the wind whipping at your face, as you zoom
of the tree tops. Although it would be fun it would be a bit scary, the
thought of being metres high in the air hanging from a wire is a bit
scary.
Over all I would love to try the zip lining and fly over the trees, and
look down and admire the view.

Activity 2 Protective Plant
  1. Plums
  2. Capsicum
  3. Raspberries
  4. Oranges
  5. Mint
  6. Kumara
  7. Apples
  8. Corn
  9. Onions

Activity 3 A House Is Not A Home

I picked the Lansan trees in the Caribbean because I think it is
interesting that people believed that the resin from the trees can
be used ward mosquitoes. I think that it is good that they are
teaching the people who harvest the resin from the trees how to do
it in a way so they don’t damage the trees.

SLJ Day 1 Preserving The Past Week 4

Activity 1 World Of Wearable Art (WOW)
  1. What made you decide to create the World Of Wearable Arts?
  2. Do you participate in the competition?
  3. Do you think that people have benefited from Wearable Arts?
  4. What's your favourite part of the World Of Wearable Arts?
  5. Do you enjoy seeing what other people have created?

Activity 2 Guardians Of The Sea
I don’t believe that Taniwha exist. I think this because
I personally don’t think that a dragon under the sea exits, and I
just don’t believe in this sort of thing.

Activity 3 The Sky In Shanghai
Sacred to walk out the door
The bustling city submerged in thick smog
Gathering my bravery I step outside
A coughing sensation builds in my throat as I breathe in the harsh air
Putting my nose in my t-shirt I run to the car and jump in

SLJ Day 5 Here To Stay Week 3

Activity 1 Persistent Pollution
1. I did not know that when we burn fossil fuel they let off greenhouse
gases such as, Carbon Dioxide, Nitrous Oxide, Methane and
Fluorinated Gasses that trap heat in the earth's atmosphere
creating an increase in  global warming.

2. I did not know that climate change had an increase in mold and
that there is more pollen.

3. I did not know that smog can cause serious health problems.

Activity 2 Changing Climates
  1. I like to watch TV and movies with my family.
  2. I like to spend time with my pets.
  3. Another thing I like to do is draw and paint.
  4. I also like watching the rain from my window
  5. I also like reading and playing games with my family

Activity 3 Let It Rain
The pitter patter of the Nitric and Sulfuric acid rain on the roof had
stopped. Slowly opening the door I look around, the flowers are
wilted and dead. The trees stripped of leaves, leaving only the
damp bark. The leaves that were once thriving now, shrivelled
on the ground in a pile.

I look up and the clouds are a murky grey, with the wind
pushing them along black sky. I walk down my driveway to the
road, the wet gravel crunching under my every step.
Reaching the road the flowing dark smelly mist floats by me.
The grass on the side of the road is lying flat, after being
battered by the pounding acid rain. The creek on the side of
the road catches my eyes as dark brown water flows between
the rocks.

The once vibrant trees now with barely any leaves and the colour
has been drained away after the storm. I walk back inside feeling
sad at the sights I have seen.

SLJ Day 4 Like A Sence Out Of A Movie Week 3

Activity 1 The Southern Lights
Lime green streaks litter the sky
Icey blue clouds drift by slowly
Great crowds gather under the bright lights
Hundreds of tiny specks dance the sky
Tomorrow the wonderful lights vanish

Activity 2 The Seven Sisters
Long ago there was man named Mītai, Mītai had seven older
brothers, they all loved themselves so much that they could not
marry anyone less beautiful than them.

One day Mītai and his brothers went hunting when they heard
beautiful singing. They followed the music and they found the
most beautiful women they had ever seen.
All the women had long golden hair, and when they looked
at each brother they all fell in love. Mītai warned his brothers
that these women would bring harm but they did not listen.
So all seven brothers took the women back to their village where
they made them their wives.

Mītais brothers did not go hunting, instead they went to catch
kaimoana (seafood) for their wives which was all they ate.
Since the brothers had to look after their wives they did not
have time to look after themselves, so they got really skinny.

Mītai noticed that the wahine (women) never left their houses, but
one day when Mītai’s brothers were hunting they came back and their
wives were missing. Mītai koraua told him that he must watch the
women because the are the fairy women and have been looking
for ways to
come back.

Mītai hid behind a tree and waited for the women to come out, but he
noticed that there was six fantails sitting in a tree, and then he saw
one more fly out of one of the houses and land with the others.
Mītai turned himself into a kereru so that he could watch the fantails.

Mītai overheard what the women were saying and they
said that they had a plan to starve his brothers to death.
So mītiai flew back to the village and warned his brothers, they did
not believe him but then they look at themselves and agreed
to come up with a plan to get rid of the women.

So one day they got magic nets and waited outside the houses
for the women to fly out, and when they flew out the men caught
the fantails and they turned back into women and begged their
husbands to set them free. Then Mītai took the nets and turned
into an albatross and flew the nets up to the God of the stars.
He asked him to put the women far far away.
So God of the stars did and once a year the beauty
of the women can be seen and they are now known as the
Seven Sisters.

Activity 3 Crazy, Cool Clouds
I choose photo one. To me it looks like a stuffed rabbit sitting like
a human. I also see a funny looking cartoon moose.
If you turn it upside down it sort of look like a dog crossed with a
human.

Photo found on the Summer Learning Journey Website

SLJ Day 3 Taking Flight Week 3

Activity 1 Bird Of The Year
The Kingfisher lives in lots of different types of habitats like, forests, r
iver margins, farmlands, lakes and rocky coastlines. Kingfishers like
to eat small crabs, tadpoles, freshwater crayfish, and small fish.
They eat this food when they are along the water, but when they are
inland they eat, insects, spiders, small birds, lizards and mice.
Kingfishers are doing okay but they still
need help to survive.

Activity 2 Flying Foxes
If I could choose a superpower I would choose teleportation.
I would choose teleportation because it would make it so easy
getting to places. So if you lived in a big city like Perth then you
would just be able to teleport and not get stuck in traffic.
I would use teleportation to get to school and other places, and if
I was going to Christchurch it would take a matter of seconds instead
of hours.

Activity 3 Wind Beneath My Wings

SLJ Day 2 Up In The Air Week 3

Activity 1 Bee Informed
The word ‘bumblebee’ is a compound word (bumble + bee). The word ‘bumble’ means to hum, buzz, or drone.

Bumblebees can fly very quickly. They can reach ground speeds of 54 kilometres per hour (km/h).

Bumblebees are very strong! They carry up to 90 percent of their body weight in food with them to avoid starvation.

Bumblebees can do more work and carry more pollen than other bees, including honeybees. In fact, they can do up to   50 times as much work as a normal honeybee.

The number of bumblebees is declining in New Zealand due to a number of factors, including the extensive use of pesticides.

Activity 2 Carbon Sinks Don’t Stink
I would put this food down the sink, custard, tomato, cucumber,
grapefruit, cake, mango, avocados and yams.

Activity 3 Flying Fungi
To figure this maths problem out you have to count up in fives seven
times, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, then you have add them up into weeks
and day. So the final answer is 5 weeks and 1 day.
