Scratch Animation

We had to make a animation on scratch. We had to turn one of the comics that we made for the phrase of the week and turn it into an animation. I choose the the comic with the phrase E Noho ra. Here is my animation.

Ratio In Everyday Use

Gearing Up Ratio Task

  Gearing Up DLO:

Activity 1,  A. Look at the toothed cogs below. Each pair of cogs is joined by a chain. As the chain-ring cog in each pair turns one rotation, how many times does the free wheel cog turn?
i: The free wheel cog will turn twice. 2:1
ii: The free wheel cog would turn three times. 3:1
iii: The free wheel cog will turn 4 times. 4:1
iv : The free wheel cog would turn 3 times. 3:1

B. Discuss with a classmate how you can work out the number of turns by using the number of sprockets on each cog?
We see how many times the number of free wheel cog sprockets fit into the chain-ring sprockets.

Activity 2,  Look at the gears on a 10-speed or mountain bike.
How many different chain-ring cogs are connected to the crank? There is three chain - ring cogs connected to the crank.

How many different free wheel cogs are on the free wheel cluster(at the rear hub)? There are 10 free wheel cogs connected to the free wheel cluster.

Activity 3.
If you have a 10 speed or mountain bike you are allowed to ride, try changing the gears on it.
What happens as you change gears? It would change onto a different cog and the bike would either have a stronger push or a weaker push.

              b.  How many different gears does the bicycle have? It has 10 gears.

Activity 4
In question 1, you found the ratio of each gear. The ratio of this gear is 30 :20 or 1.5 : 1. This is the number of turns the free wheel cog (and therefore the back wheel) makes as the chain - ring cog turns once (
and therefore, so do the pedals).

Count the number of sprockets on each chain-ring and free wheel cog of your bike. Use this information to work out the gear ratios. About 47.
Which gear ratios are best for climbing hills? Why?
2:1, because the faster you pedal the cog will turn faster and you will be able to get up the hill.
Which gear ratios are best for cycling fast? Why?
10:1 because the higher the gear the longer you pedal but you have more push so you go faster.

Number Cruncher DLO

Success Citera:

We will have met the success criteria when we
  • Show our understanding of how a rule can be applied to create a sequence of numbers

WALT: Create a drawing that demonstrates three different ‘number crunchers’.

Each Number Cruncher must apply three different rules.

One of the rules must use multiplication.
One of the rules must use two different operations.

Check with the teacher and then be ready to post your Number Cruncher on to your learning blog.

Here is my number cruncher DLO

Mana - The Spirit Of Polynesia

Mana - The Spirit Of Polynesia

Hula hoops and dance what a surprise, on Friday last week, a man called Bernard Mangakahia came to the Karoro school to perform a show called, Mana - the spirit of Polynesia.

He did lots of dances from different countries that had different meanings. He did  a sign language act, where there was a song playing and he did sign language to the words. The act he did explained and showed that if you want to achieve something you have to work for it.

Bernard did lots of different dances, like hip hop, a haka, a Hawaiian dance, a Maori poi dance and a hoop dance. He did a haka and drew  moko on half of his face and explained what the lines, meant and where they went. He also did a poi dance, with two long poi. He showed us how to  swing them and do patterns with the poi in the air without them hitting each other.

Bernard did a hoop dance which is a Native American Indian dance which he explained to us that each hoop was a new challenge and that if you completed the challenge it was like adding another hoop and you get stronger every time. Bernard said that the hoop dance took him about 10 years to perfect. The hoop dance that he did needed fitness, flexibility and hard work. He had to spin around while going in and out of the hoops. While he was doing this he made different shapes and animals, like a horse, a flower, an eagle, a butterfly and a cactus. I enjoyed watching the hoop dance because I like watching him making the animals.

At the end he did a hip hop dance. Bernard said that one of his sons does hip hop and that he showed him some moves. Bernard also told us lots of stories about where his family is from and where he is from. He also told us that we should continue to tell stories so that they just keep going and they don’t get forgotten.

I really enjoyed watching his show and, I think it was cool that he invited people on stage to have a go at some of the things that he did.

Road Safety Week

WALT write within the persuasive writing structure.

I strongly believe that we should have kea patrol in the afternoons.
My reasons for this are, we are on a State Highway that is very busy. I think
we need kea patrol because having this keeps everyone safe, and the seniors
become role models and set examples to the juniors. Accidents happen on the
road that are out of our control, and this adds to the hazards on the road.

Firstly, when it rains the roads and children become more hazarders.  This is
because when the rain hits the windshield the rain makes things  harder to see.
When it rains, the sky is quite often darker an things are less visible. We need to
realise that where the cars park, problems become even more dangerous. When
the cars are parked along the side of the school, some kids will step out onto the
road to see if there’s cars coming. This is dangerous because if they are stepping
out onto the road, the children become dangerous for the drivers, because they
might swerve out of the way to avoid a child and hit another car.

One more reason is that the Highway gets a lot busier at 3 p.m. This is because
there are parents picking up kids and parents driving past to and from other schools.
The State highway is also the only way into town from south. Lots of dangerous
vehicles drive past, like huge trucks, motorbikes, vans, and many cars. Not long ago
someone did a U turn and crashed into another car, and only just the other day, three
cars smashed into each other. One car stopped for a kid and there were cars behind
and they hit the car in front. This becomes easy to see why we need kea patrol, the
highway is very busy!

I think it’s very important that we have kea patrol because kea patrol keeps everyone
safe. I think that kea patrol keeps the younger kids and seniors safe because they are
excited and are not paying attention. A lot of the time the juniors are talking and
laughing with each other and they completely rely on the kea patrolers. The signs
stop the cars completely and they are in between the cars and children, acting like

a safety net. I think that kea patrol is very effective, and drivers should be able to
see what is happening because there are bright orange signs and neon flags on
either side of the road.

Finally, kea patrol helps everyone. I strongly believe that road patrol helps the
seniors. Doing road patrol counts as community service. We also have a chance
to be role models to younger kids. Kea patrol helps out teachers because without
volunteers the teachers would struggle to do everything.  Road patrol also helps
the juniors get across the road safely, and if they do trip, no cars are moving so
they can get up and still be safe. I believe that kea patrol prevents accidents from
happening.

In conclusion I think it’s obvious that we need kea patrol because the signs, teachers
and the kea patrol monitors keep people safe and prevent accidents from happening.
I think the road would be more dangerous if there was no road patrol and kids
would be in much more danger. I personally believe we should have kea patrol
because kea patrol helps everyone stay safe.
