Quick Writes
This term we have been doing quick writes. A quick write is where you have 10 minutes to write a really good piece of writing. You only get to look at a picture at then you start writing.
1) Fireworks
Muramura (colourful)
As I walked into the grounds of the museum I saw a big burst of bright karaka (orange) smoke fly into the air. There was a hint of tawa (purple) and whero (red) among the orange. The fireworks looked like heavy clouds sinking to the ground.
I could smell the strong smell of smoke drifting in the air. The sound was like someone firing a gun. I was overwhelmed by the colour and the noise. Just then the sound of the gun firing stopped and all I could hear was the sound of the crowd gasping and the sound of the band playing. After about 5 minutes the last of the of the fireworks was falling to the ground. People then began to walk into the museum leaving the band alone to play their music.
2) Tomato pulp
Tomato fight
I stood outside looking at the gooey insides of the tomatoes. The people were covered in them. It looked like everyone was covered in blood. The kakano (colour) was bright whero (red) like blood. The strong aroma of tomatoes lingered in the air. I saw lots of people wearing goggles to protect their eyes from the sticky mess. I felt the tiny tomato kōpura (seeds) in between my red feet. Everyone was crushing the tomatoes under their feet and the insides splattered everywhere. I could hear the sound of the tomatoes being squashed and people screaming and yelling. I looked around me and saw that the tomatoes were everywhere. Everything was red and sticky.
3) Spiderman
Spider man
I stood outside my door and I was immediately hit by the strong aroma of petrol and smoke. I turned my head and I saw spiderman he was standing on confetti. The confetti was all different colours like whero (red), kikorangi (blue), māwhero (pink), tawa (purple) and many more. The confetti was all different colours and shapes. It looked like someone popped a disco ball. Then I heard the sudden bang of the train going along the track. Next I heard the loud sound of a big bus speeding along the road. I saw the massive screen towering above me.
4) Stormy day
Booming thunder and crashing waves
It was a stormy ra (day). I went outside and as soon as I stepped out of my house I was hit by the howling wind and the pounding rain. Suddenly there was a flash of light that spread out in the sky like matimati (fingers) crawling across the sky. Then there was the booming sound of the thunder that echoed across the sky. I could smell the strong aroma of electricity and saltwater in the air. There was the sudden crash of the waves smashing against the hard cold rocks. Now the rain was bucketing down on me and drenching me with wai (water.) It was a cold dark day and nobody was outside. The town was deserted and I was alone. I suddenly felt scared. I went back inside and then the wind picked up and was coming in through the gaps in the whare (house.) It sounded like the house was talking.

The Bee Keeper
Quick Write Number One - The Beekeeper
For the next two weeks we are going to work on ‘Quick Writes.’ This is where you are given something to write about (a writing prompt) and you only have 10mins to write as much as possible using this writing prompt.
For our writing prompts we will use either images or short videos.
The purpose of this is to practise writing fluently.
When we look at our writing prompt we will have about 10-15 mins to discuss it and brainstorm some ideas and vocabulary.
Our learning goals are to:
-write a description, using powerful words and phrases
-include some Te Reo Māori
-carefully check that our sentences make sense and have correct punctuation and spelling.
When we are writing we need to think about…
- What do I want my reader to see?
2) What do I want my reader to hear?
3) What do I want my reader to smell?
Tips:
-look closely at the picture or video
-think about the three key questions and the learning goals
-give yourself time to plan and write
Do your writing here
As I walked into the orchard I could hear the bees humming and the smell of the fresh clean spring air hit my face. When I got closer to the bees the smell changed and I could smell the smell of the strong sugary honey. I could hear the bees humming and buzzing. I slowly and carefully took out the frame from the beehive. I carefully scraped the sweet honey off the frame. The korukoru (flowers) were blooming all around me in the orchard. The ra (sun) was shining and there was not a kapua (cloud) to be seen. The air was still and calm.

Robot Rampage
This term we have been learning how to write a narrative piece of writing. The class got a story starter and we had watch it. Then we had go and write a piece of writing. Here is my writing.
By Hannah
Every weekend there was one job Jacob hated doing: doing the dishes. He’d much rather be building his latest robot invention in the shed. That was it! What if Jacob could build a robot to do the dishes? One rangi (day) Jacob’s dad told him that he had to do the dishes. That po (night) Jacob decided he would begin to make his robot that would do the dishes. He stayed up all night constructing his robot in the garage. In the morning it was finally finished. It took him a few attempts to do it. But it was finally done. He took it into the house and turned it on. The robot took a few seconds to turn on. Just then his little sister Courtney came into the kitchen. Courtney had long blonde curly hair that billowed when she ran. She always had her hair out she did not like to have it tied up. Jacob also had blonde hair but his was straight. He had short hair and a fringe that fell down on his face. She saw the robot and got very excited. “What is it?” she asked. “It is a robot that I made to do the dishes,” he replied. “Wow that is a great idea!” cried Courtney excitedly. “Can I please push the buttons?” said Courtney. “No,” replied Jacob “Why not?” whined Courtney. Jacob just had to check the robot for anything that he might have missed when he was building it. He didn’t find anything but that was good. He left his robot in the kitchen and went to go to the pool with his friends. When he got home it was time to have tea. Then after a while Jacob had decided that he would test his robot the next day when his mum asked him to do the dishes. He put down the remote that controlled the robot next to the robot. Then he went to bed. But he did not know what was going to happen when he was in bed…
He woke up in the middle of the night with a fright. He had heard a bang in the kitchen. He heard it again Bang! Crash! Jacob got out of bed and went down the stairs. Then he crept into the kitchen and looked around. It was dark and the only light was the marama (moon) shining through the matapihi (window.) So all he could see was the silhouette of the thing in the kitchen. He still did not know what was in the kitchen. Just then Courtney came into the kitchen to get a drink of water. But instead of getting the water she saw her brother in the kitchen. “ What are you doing down here at this time of the night? She asked. “I heard banging noises down here so I came down to see what the noise was,” said Jacob. “But there's nothing down here though,” replied Courtney confused. “There is something down here I could hear it and I saw the silhouette of something, I will show you so you will believe me!” snapped Jacob.
“Fine then show me!” Courtney snapped back. “Ok let’s stop yelling other wise we will wake mum and dad up,” Jacob whispered. “Ok,” Courtney agreed. Jacob started walking and told Courtney to follow him. They both peaked around the corner and they saw the silhouette again. It was buy the kitchen sink and it was breaking things by the sink. The brother and sister slowly crept closer to the shape. They both went to go and turn on the lights. Now that they had turned on the light they could see who the silhouette belonged to. They got a huge surprise when they saw who it belonged to. It was the robot!! “MY ROBOT!! HOW?” cried Jacob. He looked in the place where he had put down the controller. He got a a huge surprise when he saw that the controller was not there. It was buy the sink where the robot was. Jacob thought how he could have forgotten anything. He did not. But he forgot to turn off the robot and it got hold of the controller and turned himself on. Jacob and Courtney both walked over to the sink. But the robot was not washing the dishes it was breaking them on the tiles on the kitchen floor. They had to be careful where they stepped so they wouldn’t step on any glass. The robot was standing in front of the sink and was throwing the dishes on the ground behind it. Brother and sister both thought how the robot had got a hold of the controller.
Jacob and Courtney found a box to put the robot in until the morning. They also turned the robot off so it could not get out. Jacob took the controller up to his room with him when he went back to bed. The next morning they got up about 7:30 so they could go down stairs and check on the robot. When they got down there the robot was still in the box they had put it in. Their parents were still in bed and it was a Sunday morning and they liked to sleep in on Sunday mornings. Courtney and Jacob went to clean up all the broken glass that the robot had made the night before. They sat down at the table to have breakfast. Courtney then said “What about all the dishes that the robot broke, mum and dad are sure to get suspicious,” “Right,” said Jacob deep in thought about what to do. “Well we could “said Jacob but his voice trailed off,” “What about we look around the house for money and in the car, we are sure to find some money to buy some new plates, bowls and glasses,” suggested Courtney. “But we don’t know how much we will find, and we don’t know how much the the plates, glasses, and bowls will cost at the shop,” commented Jacob. “Ture,” Courtney said. Brother and sister both thought that it was worth a try to see how money they would find around the house. Next they had to figure out where in the house they would find the money. “I will check up stairs and you can check down stairs,” said Courtney sharply. “Ok ,” said Jacob. About half an hour later they met back in the kitchen. Courtney found $20.90 and Jacob found $15.65. They added up all the money that they found and they had a total of $35.65. It was enough to buy the things that they needed to have breakfast. Brother and sister decided to think of a plan later on how they would buy things for lunch and tea. Then they went to check on the robot. They got another surprise when they saw that the robot was gone again. Jacob was deep in thought. He was thinking how the robot could have got out if he had took the controller up to his room with him. Jacob thought he had made a mistake and it had got out itself. Just then they heard shouting, screaming and the sound of banging and crashing. They both ran outside and they saw a hole in the side of a house. Courtney ran to see what had happened and Jacob followed. The lady of the house said that that a robot of some sort had broke the wall of her house and started breaking her plates, glasses and bowls. Then she said that it went out of the house and that it did the same thing to another house. Then they ran to next house. Courtney and Jacob heard a noise. It was as loud as a raiona (lion) roaring. Courtney and Jacob both knew that they had to think of something to do to stop the robot. Just then Jacob thought of something. “That's it,” he cried. “What's it,” said Courtney confused. “All we have to do is make another robot, that can destroy the other robot,” Jacob explained to Courtney. “Ok,” said Courtney. Next they both ran straight to the garage they knew that they had to do something now or something bad might happen. Brother and sister both got straight to work on constructing the new robot. It did not take then very long to build the robot since there was two of them. It only took then two and a half hours. After they had finished they heard more screaming and they raced to where they heard the screaming. Once they got there they quickly activated the robot. They told the robot that it needed to destroy the other robot. It then went over to the robot and got out some pliers to get into the back of the robot so it could cut the wires in its back. The new robot cut the blue, green, red, yellow and purple wires. The old robot was busy breaking things to notice. But then it just stopped and fell to the ground. It was dead. Courtney and Jacob ran over to it. They quickly picked it up and took it to the scrap yard. The new robot was perfect it always did the right thing. From then on people payed Jacob to use his robot and he got rich.
