SLJ Day 3 Taking Action Week 4

Activity 1 Predator Free 2050 - A Call To The Arms
I liked the first video, the Cacophony Project.
I choose this video because I think that using technology as
part of the traps is a really cool idea. I think that adding technology
to the pest traps will help catch them faster, and that the big project
they are working on will work really well.

Activity 2 Protecting The Most Vulnerable
  1. Māui dolphin males are smaller and lighter than the females
  2. There are 63 individual Māui dolphins left in the world
  3. Female Māui dolphins can weigh up to 50 kg in weight
  4. Māui dolphins have a pointed dorsal fin
  5. Māui dolphins have mixed groups with male and female
  6. Māui dolphins like to swim in water deeper than 20 m

Activity 3
Polar Bear: I would save the polar bear because I don’t think that
it is fair that their population is declining because of global warming.

Panda:  I would save the panda because they are being hunted by
humans and their habitat is being destroyed.

Stinking Corpse Flower: I would choose to save this plant because
it is so unusual.

Bengal Tiger: Bengal  tigers are really endangered and I would save
these because like I said with the polar bear I don’t think that it is fair
the they die out because humans are destroying their habitats

Sumatran Rhino: I think I would save this animal because there
only around 80 left in the world

Eastern Gorilla: I would save the Eastern Gorilla because they are
cool animal and they should not go extinct because of humans.

Kakapo: I would choose to save this bird because it is native to
NZ and we need to keep it alive.

Kea: I think that the Kea needs saving, it is also another native
animal to NZ, and it can only be found in the South Island so I
think that we need to save it, because it is so rare.

Blue Throated Macaw: I think we should save this bird because
we need to stop poaching and this bird is being hunted by poachers.

Vaquita: This porpoise needs saving because they are so close
to extinction and they are so rare, did you know there is about 30
of these animals left in the world.

SLJ Day 3 Taking Flight Week 3

Activity 1 Bird Of The Year
The Kingfisher lives in lots of different types of habitats like, forests, r
iver margins, farmlands, lakes and rocky coastlines. Kingfishers like
to eat small crabs, tadpoles, freshwater crayfish, and small fish.
They eat this food when they are along the water, but when they are
inland they eat, insects, spiders, small birds, lizards and mice.
Kingfishers are doing okay but they still
need help to survive.

Activity 2 Flying Foxes
If I could choose a superpower I would choose teleportation.
I would choose teleportation because it would make it so easy
getting to places. So if you lived in a big city like Perth then you
would just be able to teleport and not get stuck in traffic.
I would use teleportation to get to school and other places, and if
I was going to Christchurch it would take a matter of seconds instead
of hours.

SLJ Day 3 First You ‘Sea’ Me Now You Don’t Week 2

Activity 1 Night Owls
I am an early riser and not a night owl.
I go to bed around 9:30 pm and read until 10:00 pm then
I go to sleep depending on the night. But I tend to naturally
wake up at about 6:30 am to 7:00 am.

My brother is a night owl, he likes to stay up late and sometimes
he likes to sleep in and sometimes he likes getting up early.

My mum is pretty much a night owl, she stays up late doing
work, and she gets up around 7:00 am and 7:30 am.

My dad is like me he normally goes to bed not long after me, and he
gets up about 6:00 am in the morning to go to work. I think that I am
an early riser not a night owl

Activity 2 A Local Delicacy
My new favourite food is Salmon Salad.

Ingredients
2 carrots
1 capsicum
1 lettuce
A handful of Spinach
4 eggs
1 chunk of smoked Salmon

Cut the carrots and capsicum. Then was the lettuce and
spinach, then cut up the salmon. After that put all the ingredients
in a bowl and mix. You can put in dressing if you prefer.  Severes 4.

Activity 3 The Midnight Zone
500 divided by 25=20 (20 adults, no children)
75 divided by 15=5 (5 children)  (75 can be divided by 25)
500-75=425 divided by 25=17 adults
Final answer: 17 adults and 5 children

SLJ Day 3 Week 1 Awesome Animals

Activity 1 Fantastic Beasts
My beast would have eight deep blue pointed eyes and a oval like head.
Tall and lean it would have a long skinny body with winding arms and wiry legs.
My beast would be able to jump onto the tallest point in the world.
Its leathery pitch black suit would shine in the light, with bright yellow stripes
going up its arms and legs. A strong pungent lemon smell wafting from its
body. My beast would make a deep hissing sound and have a menacing
snarl sure to scare you off.

Activity 2 The Secretive Skink
Pros
  • You get to look after cool native NZ animals
  • You get to live around the amazing wildlife
  • Finally you get to help make sure that the native NZ nature survives

Cons
  • You have to live on the island away from your family for a certain amount
  • of time
  • If you are a DOC ranger that uses 1080 then other people might hate
you because you’re using a bad chemical.
  • They could be getting paid less than they should
I would not want to be a DOC ranger because it is not what I want to do when
I am older.

Activity 3 World Wildlife Fund

  1. World Wildlife fund is working to save the Saimaa Seal.
  2. Volunteers are helping to build snow banks for the seals.
  3. The seals are using the snow banks to give birth to their babies.
